I received a call Saturday night from some good friends of ours here in Aubrey. I’d like to say I handled the call in a calm and rational manner but I had to ask him to repeat what he had told me three times before my brain could process that he was telling me they had just lost everything in a fire that destroyed their home.
In times of tragedy is where you really get to see the character of the community you live in. In addition to the great work by our fire and police department, and the neighboring cities of Pilot Point and Celina, a Good Samaritan put himself in harm’s way to pound on the front door while the house was on fire trying to save anyone who might have been inside.
Luckily, no one was home and despite losing virtually everything, our friends are grateful for their lives, their friends and their community.
What makes this story all the more interesting was the Good Samaritan was none other than Congressman Michael Burgess.
Way to go, Dr. Burgess.
Our friends Jesse and Christina Brinkman had the following to say, “We cannot put into words our gratitude for Dr. Burgess risking his own life to ensure our family was out of harm’s way. When he stepped onto our front porch, flames were already licking the windows of the front room and he banged on the door to make sure no one was inside. We know he has driven our road many times, has seen our family of four outdoors and we will always be grateful that God sent us an extra lifeline that day. Thank you Dr. Mike Burgess.”
